In August of 2024, we launched a new monthly podcast called “Being Right At Home.” Our hope is to convey the values we hold sacred: love, equity, empowerment, collaboration, excellence, and integrity. In essence, this podcast is the heart and soul of who we are as a team.
The format is simple and convenient for listeners: Each month, Nancy Servoss, Fund Development Specialist at Community Homeworks, interviews a participant, collaborator, staff member, or volunteer. For 15-30 minutes, she gleans stories that highlight not only what we do but also – more importantly – the impact of our work.
Interviews explore social equity issues like intergenerational wealth, personal growth and well-being, mutual trust/respect, and community building.
“Stories are unifiers because they remind us of how much we have in common. In this podcast, participants experience what we all face periodically: uncertainty, fear, and even confusion when it comes to our homes. It is a privilege to hear their stories because it connects us in a very human way,” said Nancy after launching the podcast.
As an example, Episode 1 features the story of Kim and Matt, busy parents to teenagers. When they learned their water heater was no longer safe to use, they panicked because life was already way too full of challenges. At one point, Kim candidly described her experience of having our workers in her home. Initially, she was scared and felt vulnerable. In the podcast, she teared up and shared, “I didn’t feel judged, I didn’t feel embarrassed.” Matt continued with his own assessment, “They genuinely cared. They were compassionate…” after which Kim simply stated, “They are beautiful souls.” Now, months later, the family is thriving. Kim went on to graduate and is loving her work as a full-time nurse.
Clearly, this family reminds us that assisting another during a rough time promotes community and a mutual sense of well-being.
